Privacy policy: TextFold for the browser
Last updated October 28, 2026
TextFold for the browser is a button that sends the page you are reading to TextFold, the free program on your computer. This policy is about the extension. It is short because the extension has no server: it sends nothing over the internet.
What the extension reads, and when
Only when you click its button, and only in the tab you click it in:
- the page as your browser shows it: its HTML, the text in its frames and shadow roots, its title and its address. This can include what the page shows only to you, such as your name when you are signed in;
- the source of each formula the page's MathJax drew, asked of MathJax in the page;
- the article in it, as two open-source reading views read it (Defuddle and Readability), run inside your browser.
It reads no other tab, no page you have not clicked it on, and nothing in the background. It does not read your browsing history, your cookies, your passwords, or what you type into forms.
Where it goes
The extension hands what it read to TextFold on your computer through the browser's native messaging, a channel between the browser and a program installed on the same computer. No network port is opened, and only TextFold receives it. The extension has no server, sends nothing over the network, and contains no analytics, advertising or tracking. It runs only the code it ships with.
What TextFold does with it
TextFold keeps the page in your library, a folder on your computer that you can open, move and delete. Its levels, from a one-screen map to every word, are written by the AI model you choose in TextFold's settings: a model that runs on your computer, or a model provider you connected with your own account or key. When TextFold is running, it starts writing the levels of a newly sent page at once, and the page's text goes to that model, under its provider's terms. With a model on your computer, the text stays on it.
TextFold itself asks GitHub for its newest version from time to time; nothing of yours is sent.
What the developer receives
Nothing. The developer of TextFold receives no data from the extension or from the app, and sells or shares none. The use of information received from the extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Removing it
Delete a page in TextFold, or its folder in your library. Removing the extension stops it reading anything; removing TextFold removes the program it talks to, and your library stays yours to keep or delete.
Questions and changes
Ask in the project's issues on GitHub. If this policy changes, this page says so, with the date above. The extension's code is open, with TextFold's: github.com/chenxiachan/textfold.
